“For Those Who Tend the Roots”
How does a restaurant survive without waitstaff and dishwashers? How does a farm realize its promise without harvest workers? What would a hospital stay be like without orderlies and kitchen staff? So much of the comfort and abundance we take for granted depends on people who are often overworked, underpaid, and overlooked, perhaps even in harm’s way. From slavery to servanthood to migrant work and minimal salaries, most societies have built their towers on the backs of abused workers. Isn’t it time we recognize and value the contributions of everyone to the survival of civilization?
