“Why the Darkness”

As a result of the restrictions of solitary monasticism, monks sometimes experienced what the 5th century monk John Cassian called acedia and the “noonday demon.” The combination of sheltering in place and the long nights of this time of year make us susceptible to a complicated emotion like acedia. We explore how opening ourselves to the dark might lead to resources for resilience.
