Leading our first Sunday service in Zoom will be the Rev. Joe Cleveland, who is cutting his sabbatical short to be with us, Nikki Williams and John Fisher. Dan Berggren will join us on acoustical guitar. Zoom is the web-conferencing tool we’re using as our new virtual meeting house. You may participate in video on your desktop, laptop, or phone or audio alone via phone.

Here’s what you need to know in using Zoom, which is easy whether you’re computer savvy or not. If you have a question or issue, feel free to contact Dan Forbush at or 518-487-0165.

What is Zoom?

  • Zoom allows people who are miles apart to use their computers (or smart phones) to meet face to face. You can see and hear all participants on your computer screen, and they can see and hear you.  
  • UUCSS will be using Zoom to host Sunday Services, meetings, and group gatherings. 
  • Zoom is used widely in business and education. It’s safe to use.

How do I access (download) Zoom so that I can attend a UU meeting? 

  • If you don’t already have/use Zoom on your computer (or smartphone) you will have an opportunity to get it when you click on your invitation to join your first meeting.  
  • Next, click on the link that offers access to Zoom (a download). After a minute or two you’ll be good to go. After this first step your computer will access Zoom for you automatically each time you accept an invitation. 

How do I join a meeting? 

  • Receiving an invitation to a Zoom meeting provides the way in.
  • When you receive an email from UUCSS with an invitation, click on the notice that looks like this:

  • If the meeting has not started, you will be asked to wait until the host starts the meeting.
  • If the meeting has started, you will either enter the meeting either immediately or when the host is notified that you are waiting and invites you in. 
  • The following message will also be on the “join the meeting” screen in case you need it:

Once I’m in the meeting, what happens?

  • The two most used options for meeting visuals are these:
    1) The meeting host(s) will be the only person(s) you’ll see on the screen.
    2) The meeting host(s) plus all attendees will be visible in a section of the screen, either with live faces or only names.
  • Attendees can sometimes select their personal preference of live or name only by clicking in the upper right corner of their section of the Zoom screen for a list of options. 
  • In general, attendees will not be able to be heard by the others in the group (attendees will be muted) when they first join the meeting. This is because computers pick up background noises and, with larger groups especially, this may cause audio distortion. 
  • Using headphones gives attendees the best audio, but they are not necessary.
  • The host can mute or unmute attendees as desirable and/or necessary. Sometimes you will be instructed to unmute yourself. You can do this by clicking in either of two places: the microphone icon at the lower left of the Zoom screen, or in your personal section. 

What are the most popular and utilized features and options for beginners?

  • It is important to run your cursor along the bottom of the meeting screen. Most of the features and options reside in this bar, but it is not visible all the time unless your cursor opens it. These are the most often utilized items in the bar:
    • Participants: Here you will find a list of who is attending, and a place to click “raise your hand” so that you can address the group if attendees are asked to use this feature by the host. 
    • Chat: Here you can type in a question or comment while the meeting is in session. You can direct your comment to either the whole group or privately to an individual and they can reply. 
  • In your section of the screen you will find menus in the upper right corner:
    • Unmute: When given the option by the host, you can unmute yourself here. 
    • (…) three dots: A menu to customize your experience. 
  • You can leave the meeting by clicking at lower right.
