STUDY CIRCLES

Political Action for November 2020
Offered by Lale Davidson
Want to do something useful for the November 2020 election, but not sure what to do?  Want to make sure that you are putting your energy toward the most impactful place? Join the Political Action Study Group. We will watch webinars from Vote Save America, When We Vote, Sierra Club, and others, and we’ll explore the swing state organizing tools of Vote Forward, Swing Left, Black Voters Matter and more. We will pick individualized/ collective political actions, set goals for how many hours a week of letter writing, phone calls, or texting we plan to donate, then we’ll share our accomplishments, insights, and problems to cheer each other on. If not now, when. If not us, who?

Wednesdays 10 – 11am on July 15, 22, 29, Aug. 5

Sign up on this Google Doc Link and Lale will send you a Zoom link.

Study Group: Facing Racism Straight On
Offered by Lucy Manning
The turmoil and inequities of race relations have recently come to the forefront with George Floyd’s death and is awakening and educating the white community worldwide. Since participating in Rev Joe’s sessions last year on “White Fragility: Why it’s So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism” by Robin DiAngelo, I have wanted to explore this in more depth. I am currently reading “So You Want to Talk About Race” by Ijeoma Oluo and would love to study and share it with some UU friends! We need to get uncomfortable to learn and grow and love this quote from her introduction!

I propose we meet weekly by Zoom for 1 hour for 6 weeks.  Depending who joins, we can meet at Spa Park appropriately distanced and masked!

I purchased the Kindle version which includes discussion questions at the end that can be our starting point.  I invite and encourage participants to share articles or other sources for us to review also.

Mondays from 10-11am on July 20, 27, August 3, 10, 17, 24
I hope you can join me! Lucy Manning, lucymnnng@gmail.com, 757-646-0877.

SOCIAL BUUBBLES

Meditation for Strugglers:
Offered by Pam Collins
If you’re like me, meditation is one of those “ought to’s” that seems hard to commit to.  Like so many other similar practices, it’s sometimes easier to do with a “crowd”.  Join me in experimenting with virtual group meditation.  We’ll start small and build from there and spend time processing our experiences, as well as sharing tips, inspirational quotes and our own “dharma talks.”  There’s also the reputed power of group meditation for effecting change.  Worth a try.

2nd and 4th Tuesdays at 10am – 11am
July 14th — Sept. 29

Ted Talk Web Camp
Offered by Julie Holmberg
I find there are SO many great Ted Talks that inspire thought and conversation!  How about a group that listens to a chosen Talk individually, and then we get together on Zoom to share our thoughts and reactions.  I am happy to choose the first week’s topic and act as moderator.   Ideally,   other participants might want to make selections for the following  weeks, and that would be great.

Join me for week one,  which is called The Greater Good…”In times of crisis, how do we decide what personal sacrifices we must make for the benefit of all? This hour, TED speakers share four different ideas about how to act for the greater good.”

Wednesday evenings, 7-8 PM  6 sessions — July 14, 28, Aug. 11, 25, and Sept. 8 and 22
