In 1968, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and many others called for a “revolution of values” in America. They sought to build a broad, fusion movement that could unite poor and impacted communities across the country. The name they chose for this movement effort was a direct cry from the underside of history: The Poor People’s Campaign.

In 2017, the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival was launched by Bishop William J. Barber and Rev. Liz Theoharis and other partners to carry on this unfinished work.

An Unsettling Force is a documentary film twenty years in the making about this renewed effort to carry on the work that Dr. King called us to do. Filmmaker Dara Kelly has worked with movement leaders Rev. Theoharis and Bishop Barber throughout those years while the “Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival” evolved. From the first 40 Days of Action through Moral Mondays in 2013 to 2021, the film tracks the development of this “fusion movement.”
