Social Justice Notes
Excerpt from Time’s Eulogy for Jane Goodall: Ambassador of Hope:
“…In her near-century of life, Goodall was all about the hope. In her final
conversation with TIME, also in 2021, she said, “I’m about to leave the world with all
the mess, whereas young people have to grow up into it. If they succumb to the doom
and gloom, that’s the end. If you don’t hope you sink into apathy, hope is a crucial way
to get through this.”
Goodall’s long, heartening campaign has ended. Let’s now see if we’re all worthy of
her work.”
Last Sunday, Katie and I attended “Seed our Souls: A Sustainability Showcase”
https://www.ourlodgefoundation.org/sos [workshops listed here] in Albany.
Alessandra Payne, organizer, entrepreneur, and driving force, spoke at the October
Social Justice Social Hour, describing her concept, the varied workshops, and
challenges she faced. The SJSH “gang” encouraged Alessandra’s creative approach,
committed to support this event, and help develop useful resources and connections
for future sustainability activism. Our Lodge Foundation provided modest financial
support, a substantial publicity packet, and three board directors attended, including
Nichola Dutré, Board Secretary, who presented an ingenious workshop on “Growing
Wealth/Urban Homesteading.” Proceedings were recorded, and the video should
forthcoming.
Friday morning, Indivisible ADK/Saratoga joined a protest in Albany to demand that
Senator Schumer and other Democratic party leaders step down for their failure to
“win” the shutdown. Later Friday, also in Albany, UUC-SS members joined a vigil to
encourage Governor Hochul to sign the Medical Aid in Dying Bill on her desk.
The Social Justice Team will have a hybrid meeting after this Sunday’s Service.
