Social Justice Team Notes – 12 June 2025

Medical Aid in Dying – New York State Senate passed the Medical Aid in Dying
Act by a 35-27 vote, bringing the Empire State one step nearer to comprehensive end-
of-life care options.
With Governor Hochul’s signature, New York will become the 13th U.S. jurisdiction
to offer this compassionate choice. Email Gov. Hochul today and urge her to sign
the bill without delay.
Flag Day Parade – We will meet at 11am in the UUCSS parking lot to participate in
the Flag Day Parade this Saturday, 14 June. The UU contingent will march with our
Side with Love banner and ask people to wear yellow Side with Love UU shirts if they
have one, and if they don't, please join us anyway!

Saratoga Springs Gathering for Juneteenth Celebration – The Saratoga Springs
community will commemorate the fourth annual Juneteenth observance on Thursday,

19 June, with a vibrant, family-friendly celebration at the Saratoga Regional YMCA
from 11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. that is free and open to the public.
This year’s theme, “Jack Yates & Emancipation Park,” honors the formerly enslaved
minister who helped establish Houston’s Emancipation Park in 1872—one of the first
public spaces in the United States specifically created to celebrate Juneteenth.

Headlining the event is the Community Voices of Praise Choir, led by director Linda

Mallory Mitchell, bringing gospel energy and soul to the afternoon’s cultural program.
Also featured will be a dramatic reading from Booker T. Washington’s “The
Grapevine,” alongside interpretive dance, live performances, poetry, and reflections on
Black history and liberation.
The event kicks off at 11:30 a.m. with family-friendly workshops, followed by the
Cultural Program from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to visit
community tabling exhibits available both before and after the main program. The
celebration concludes with a Jubilee Reception from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., where cake and
ice cream will be served in the spirit of joy and remembrance.
Admission is free, and attendees may purchase lunch from Refresh Kitchen, located
inside the Senior Center next to the YMCA.
All adults (18+) must bring photo ID and sign in at the YMCA front desk upon
arrival. Flyer available in the sanctuary.
